Happy Customer & Marshmallows

We had a lovely email from a  customer who loves using our hand painted enamelware. She was at home with her brother being looked after, as their mummy was out and about. As a treat, they made a luxurious hot chocolate with all the trimmings!  This includes whipped cream & marshmallows on top of a lot of milky hot chocolate all in the popular green enamelware mugs. Bright green mug with hot choc and marshmallows   They sent in a photo, with their story, which is just lovely. It certainly made our day. We want to do our bit for Nepal

This almost feels like a letter to those of you who read this blog post. We are very deeply affected by the tragic consequences of the earthquake in Nepal on 25 April 2015. As the news keeps coming in of increasing loss of lives, the number has increased to almost 5,000, and it is still being counted. The earthquake not only shook Nepal but neighbouring India as well. This is the land we consider almost our own due to our shared culture and open border. Our stories are similar and growing up we hear tales of brave Nepali people: of Sherpas and Gurkhas and all Nepalis, affectionately called ‘Kanchas’ (boys) and ‘Kanchis’ (girls) and their kukhri (Nepali dagger) wielding ways and their oh so charming smiles.

When I last visited Nepal years ago in 1996, I was a student and saw the beauty of the mountain kingdom with romantic eyes. Kathmandu was a site to behold, its beautiful Thamel district appeared a calmer version of various parts of India. Nestled in the Himalayas, Pokhara and Kathmandu cast a spell on us that remains to this day. We made friends in these places we hope to go back and meet again. I have been planning to revisit the beautiful land of brave people with my children so they may see the magic of this land firsthand and hopefully carry beautiful memories of it too.

However, with tragedy unfolding in the wake of the earthquake and numerous stories of personal loss still coming in, we know in our hearts that the immediate need is to help in the aftermath of this tragedy. We would like to do our bit to help in whatever way possible. Therefore we have decided to donate  proceeds of sales of the Indian Street range to various charities trying to coordinate and help in the rescue and rehabilitation efforts in Nepal. We plan to keep supporting them through this for the foreseeable future. http://www.redcross.org.uk/nepalearthquake http://blogs.unicef.org.uk/category/countries/nepal/ Unicef says almost 1 million children need help due to this earthquake within Nepal. http://www.savethechildren.org.uk/about-us/emergencies/nepal-earthquake All images of Nepal used in this post are courtesy of Nitty Gritty Images who visited Nepal earlier on in the year. The images are heartfelt and touching and we have used these with their permission.

New season, new designs and introducing Jasmine White Fabrics ….

Its been a busy summer for us at Jasmine White London HQ. We’ve been exhibiting at various shows, starting off with Windsor Horse Trials at the Royal Windsor Race Course, and followed that with amongst others, Home and Gift at Harrogate. We introduced new products such as hob covers in our design ranges, with Stars and Birds of Paradise flying off shelves since launch, including our   lovely egg cosy at the request of our ‘little’ Jasmine White fans, my two boys. So now we have egg cosies on offer in not only the Birds of Paradise design and Stars but also our Indian Street range as, surprise, surprise, the boys love the ‘tuk tuks’/autorikshaws and trucks printed all over them. We’ve also been exploring a variety of new designs and getting inspired by the vibrancy of colour, which as most of you will know by now is something we enjoy working with. Given the lovely sunshine we were lucky to get this summer, its not hard to see why either! We are now introducing our beautiful new Bright Red with Floral Splash and Duck Egg Iris pattern in fabric. As the demand for our fabric is now growing we are happy to announce that we are able to supply our customers with our fabric. These are the designs we are adapting to fabrics:

We are expanding our accessories this Autumn and hence there are a few more items in your favourite designs, just in time to help with the Christmas season..These will be on our website soon. Keep an eye out for the Fairs we will be attending, we’ve got a back to back schedule over the Winter months. x Supriya

A recent visit to India to meet up with Jasmine White production teams.

We visited India in April  and all credit is due to the team at Advent Custom Tours http://www.adventcustomtours.com who very kindly held our hand as we navigated the hot weather in Delhi at 37Degrees to high up in the Himalayan Mountains where it dipped to around 13-14Degrees, which of course was pretty normal given the weather in England! What with last minute flights and travel related issues, it was very handy to have a team that deals with tailor made travel to help us around.Kashmir Mountains

Visiting the Production Team in Kashmir

It was lovely to be in Srinagar which is the capital of Kashmir and being nestled among the Pir Panjal and Zabarwan mountain ranges in the Himalayan mountains is quite magical. Srinagar is a valley in the foothills of these mountains and is well known for its beautiful Mughal Gardens and Houseboats, or ‘Shikharas’ on the beautiful Dal Lake. The view of these majestic mountains and their stunning peaks rising above and around the valley are an impressive sight to behold. The Mountain peaks Kotwal (14,211 feet)and Mahadev (18,013 feet) peaks, amongst others, are visible from the valley. The Mahadev is the backdrop of the Shalimar gardens which is rather stunning. It is in Srinagar that we visited our production team which is focused on developing the traditional art of hand painting amongst the young women so that it provides them with a means of income, an aspect that is of firm importance to the development of Jasmine White products. Handpainting is a traditional skill practiced by men, which is not unlike most other parts of India. At Jasmine White we are keen to ensure this skill is sustained and also provides an income stream to women who can work from home. As a first for our enterprise, our senior artisan Tareque is now training women to work on this skill from home, and where possible from a special ‘workshop’ for women.

Most of the artisans in our Srinagar production facility undertake the work at their homes around their families, and they work in their spare time or on a ‘project basis’ for the production unit. We enjoyed our introduction to Kehva, a beautiful blend of cardamom and clove which is traditionally the ‘tea’ drunk in Kashmir. The beautiful gardens and the Dal Lake that makes up the city are very enticing. We have promised ourselves to go back for a Houseboat stay and also to further develop our ties with the magical hands that work on our beautiful products.

Then to Delhi

We also visited our production unit in Delhi which produces our textile products. We are pleased that the team that works on the Indian Street, Stars and Birds of Paradise ranges does not have  any child employees or a ‘tea boy’ (typically a young boy who instead of being at school is found in offices all over the country serving teas) , and that all teas/coffees/soft drinks are made by the unit members themselves, or bought in by them. We are satisfied that fair wages are paid at both our units and no sweat shops operate here. It is these aspects that are the foundation of the Jasmine White brand and so with each product an integrity as well as beautiful craftsmanship can be assured. Off to plan the next trip then …………………….
